Library Service Updates (February 2024)

New Arrivals in Different Subject Categories

To enable users to quickly identify the resources they need on our list of new arrivals, we have categorized them under different subjects on the library website. You can now browse through the latest additions (which are related to your disciplines and/or study programmes) over the last 3 months (including print books, e-books and audio-visual materials).

New Arrivals Webpage

You are also welcome to visit the “New Book Display” corner to find new titles that are of use and interest to you. All these items will be placed in this area for two months. Do come and have a look around during the breaks or after class.

Upgrade of EndNote to Version 21

EndNote 21

The EndNote (Version 20) software for reference management has been upgraded to Version 21.

You can go to EndNote in the Library Guides to download the latest version for free and browse the instructions of use.

Release of Full Report on the Library User Survey 2023

The full report (Network login is required.) on the library user survey 2023 is out! It sets out the scores for all the survey questions as well as our responses to users’ comments and suggestions about library services, resources, and facilities.

The scores given and the comments made by the respondents provide a clear indication of what we excel in and what we need to further improve and develop before we could provide better support for the teaching, learning and research activities at Saint Francis University (SFU) in the years ahead.

Library Facts and Figures

A newly designed fact sheet which provides the latest information on the size of our collections and the usage rate of our facilities has been posted to the Library website. You are most welcome to check it out and see what and how we did in key service areas in the Academic Year of 2022-23. The data will be updated yearly.

Official Launch of the Portable Charging Service

Portable Chargers

The Library offers a wide variety of electronic accessories including power adapters and USB charging cables to support the use of laptops and mobile devices for self-learning purposes.

In December 2023, the Library launched the portable charging service to meet the increasing demand for additional charging facilities. A total of 6 portable chargers are now available for loan at the Help Desk of the Learning Commons.

For a full list of the accessories and the conditions of use, please refer to Computer Accessories for Loan.

New Entrance Gates at the Learning Commons

New Entrance Gate

To provide more convenient access to the Learning Commons for all users including students with special education needs (SEN), a new set of swing turnstile gates has been installed.

Unlike the previous tripod turnstile gates which need to be pushed manually, the new gates are equipped with electrically controlled barriers which will open automatically when users tap their cards upon entry.

The new gates will function more effectively and safely, and users in wheelchairs can pass through it easily.

Motor Standing Desk for SEN Users

Motor Standing Desk

To create a more inclusive study environment for SEN users, the Library has set up a motor-driven standing desk in the area adjacent to the CBCC Library counter for their use. The height of the desk can be adjusted electrically by pressing the button on the control panel mounted on the underside of the desk.

External adaptors attached to the desk allow users to charge their electronic devices.

Installation of a Solar-Powered Mosquito Trap

Solar-Powered Mosquito Trap

In October 2023, a solar-powered mosquito trap was installed in the garden on the Library podium. We hope this device can free users from mosquito bites and allow them to truly relax after a long day and enjoy the comfort and tranquility of the outdoor space nestled in lush greenery.

Journal Quiz Competition – Another Winner in 2023

Emerald Winner

Great news! A student from our institution won the fourth prize of the online Emerald Journal Reading Quiz Competition under the theme of “The Evolution of Streaming Platforms” in October 2023, just a few months after another student was awarded the second prize in the same competition featuring the theme “Knowledge Behind Gastronomic Delight” in May 2023.

The online quiz competitions are held twice a year under the aegis of Emerald Publishing, a global academic e-resources provider. How lucky we are to have two winners in the same year! Congratulations!

Enhancement of E-Resources

The Library has sought to broaden the range of our e-resources so as to meet the ever-increasing learning, teaching and research needs of users in different subject disciplines. In this connection, the Library has recently added the following e-databases:

E-Databases Introduction
CINAHL Ultimate CINAHL Ultimate provides full-text access to most nursing and allied health journals, covering more than 50 nursing specialties. It also offers supplementary information such as quick lessons and evidence-based care sheets.
SPORTDiscus with Full Text SPORTDiscus with Full Text is a comprehensive source for sports research, covering hundreds of full-text journals in physical fitness, health education, sports medicine, kinesiology and more.

At present, about 300 e-databases in different subjects are accessible via the Database List of the Library Guides both on and off campus.
